The Roxy Theatre

The Roxy Theater has 650 seats and is one of only 600 independent theaters remaining in the United States. It's top of the line with DLP Cinema to showcase your film on the big screen in front of a packed theater. The Roxy Theatre started out as the Lyric Theatre, founded by Harry Hartman, who first opened its doors on February 1st, 1921. Harry was a businessman who wanted to provide more seating and larger stage accommodations for vaudeville performances. The theatre would later be sold to Clark and Greenberg Theatres of Philadelphia during the spring of 1933 due to the great depression. They would renovate both the interiors and exteriors before re-opening the theatre and giving it the name we know today: "The Roxy". During its first season, the Roxy would continue vaudeville on the stage, including wild west shows, minstrels, and local productions. The late fifties saw the return of live entertainment on Roxy's stage, which included the famous teen idols of the time: Bobby Vinton, Bobby Rydell, and Fabian. In the early sixties, after a decade of fierce competition from Television, Clark and Greenberg decided to give up their lease on the theatre, and it was acquired by Angstadt and Wolfe Theatres on June 1st, 1970. They reintroduced concerts, plays, magic shows, dance recitals, and weddings, which featured artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Martin Mull, Alex Harvey Band, KISS, and many others. In 1988, Angstadt and Wolfe Theatres partner Richard C Wolfe acquired complete ownership of the theatre through a new corporation, Roxy Management Company, Inc. More restorations would take place until 2010, when the final one would take place.

The history of this theatre goes back generations and has been around for years. The Eleanor Rose International Film Festival is proud to utilize this historic space when featuring so many projects from independent filmmakers. Who wouldn't want to experience cinema at a place rich with history!?

Submissions from all over the globe!

Golden Earth Graphic_edited_edited.png

As the name of our festival suggests, we accept submissions from all over the world. Most film festivals only screen local films, which show us one side of life we are all familiar with. Eleanor Rose, however, gives audiences the chance to experience cinema from different countries. Giving everyone a glimpse of the different lifestyles and filming techniques other places have to offer!

Watching international films allows us to gain cultural awareness, which gives us a deep understanding of other perspectives and beliefs, gives us broadened perspectives of different economic, social, and political issues, becomes a way for audiences to learn a new language, celebrates artistic merit, showcases unique storytelling techniques, and keeps us culturally informed in society!

Meet Eleanor Rose

IMG_0356.jpeg

We'd like you to personally meet Eleanor Rose, the grandmother of Jacob Jones, and who the festival is named after. She was born in Bethlehem and resided there her whole life. One of the biggest ways they would bond was by watching movies together. She was Jacob's best friend and an irreplaceable family member who made a lasting impact on his life. By creating this festival, he keeps the legacy of his grandmother alive and fills the hole that was left in the world when she passed on.
